Internship – A Step towards Corporate World

You have just graduated from an A- or B-grade college and are all set to go through the intensive interview process with a killer cover letter, great marks and glowing recommendations. But your resume misses out to mention one important item – internship. If you think that this one miss can cause no harm, think again! You need to be extremely lucky to get the position at your dream company without internship by your side. Such is the importance of an internship program that a student is required to go through to achieve a good job in a good company. Graduating students with paid or unpaid internships are at a higher chance of landing up at a full-time position. Due to this vital advantage of obtaining a better career, students opt for undergoing internships even as undergraduates. Hence, it is not unusual for graduates to take up internships in the hopes of turning it into a permanent position or at least building a fruitful resume. With rapid changes in the economy, the nature of work is, as well, changing drastically. Read through the following lines to know more on the significance of internship.

Significance Of Internship

Provides Experience & Knowledge

Classroom studies are confined only to books and theoretical learning. Application of these theories and lectures delivered in classrooms differ a little from the set format. Through internship, students get not only get a first-hand experience of these theories, but also learn the applications of these theories in real challenges. Also, the company exposure allows students to enhance their knowledge and contribute it to the company in their specialized fields. For example, doing an internship in an advertising company exposes the students to the various processes that are equally important as those taught in the school as strategies.

Improves Skills

Several skills and tasks are necessary to accomplish a job effectively and efficiently. These skills are imparted to a student during his tenure as an intern. It exposes him to skills, such as oral and written communication, presentation, leadership, planning, time, and project management. No matter how simple or difficult the task is, students are taught to take up the challenge and polish their skills to prove themselves to their seniors or employers.

Boosts Self-Confidence

Doing an internship is a great learning experience in itself. The entire journey of internship allows a student to identify his strengths and weaknesses, and use both of them to the best advantage of his job and company. While going through the interview process for entering the company internship, the first question put up to students is about narrating their positive and negative traits and how they can prove themselves fit for the said position. This real life experience allows them to judge themselves as to where they stand and identify their abilities of completing the given tasks. All in all, undergoing an intensive internship program boosts the self-confidence of students and motivates them towards facing big opportunities in future.

New Career Opportunities

Internship is the first ladder to success. Doing an internship in a specialized field helps students to build up a good network. When a student enters a company, he is not regarded as an intern (despite being one), but as an employee who will give his best to the company. Further, if the intern is successful in proving himself worthy for the company, he may just land up getting a permanent position in the same company after completing the internship program.

Real Corporate Feel

Another major advantage of doing an internship is working in the real corporate environment, without having to leave school or college. Internship programs are carried out during school breaks and last for a month to a year, thus allowing students to experience the workplace atmosphere. These programs are seen as great opportunities to utilize the time and knowledge to gain understanding and experience and make the most out of it in terms of converting it into a prospective career.

So we at IMT provide you an opportunity to take a step ahead and explore the corporate environment by taking advantage of the internship period.

IMT’s foundation – Case based learning

Cases are like stories or story lines that students read or explore interactively. They can direct students toward a conclusion, or provide the resources and context to discuss and debate issues dynamically.

Using a case-based approach engages students in discussion of specific situations, typically real-world examples. This method is learner-centered, and involves intense interaction between the participants. Case-based learning focuses on the building of knowledge and the group works together to examine the case. The instructor’s role is that of a facilitator and the students collaboratively address problems from a perspective that requires analysis. Much of case-based learning involves learners striving to resolve questions that have no single right answer.

Case-based learning becomes case-based reasoning when more than one case is provided. Case-based reasoning involves reasoning about multiple cases and how prior solutions can be adapted to new problems.

Cases are best used to teach people about realistic decision-making situations. For instance, cases help train pre-service teachers, instructional designers, doctors, lawyers, business people, and others, how to respond to actual problems they will encounter in their fields.

Delivering the Case

  • Emphasis should be on “content and discussion process” of case
  • Concepts, sub-concepts to be elicited should be outlined
  • A list of leading questions may also prove helpful
  • Procedures for assessing students’ effort and work on cases should be specified

Advantages

  • Context and authenticity
  • Showcases expert practices, helps students focus on real professional issues
  • Generalizes content understanding into a wider framework, potentially reducing“inert” knowledge problem
  • Lends itself naturally to effective discourse, communication, and debate among students

Disadvantages

  • The best multimedia cases can take considerable time to design and develop; a team-approach is recommended with a content specialist, instructional designers, multimedia producers, and programmers
  • Complex cases require the collection and storage of a large quantity of resources

Conclusion

Case-based learning provides opportunities for richer, deeper exploration of concepts and ideas. Students gain experience with analyzing ideas and applying concepts to solve problems or achieve goals as opposed to acquiring abstract knowledge. It also requires students to become engaged with one another and their environment with clear learning objectives.

We as an organisation at IMT Dubai provide our students with world’s best case studies to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical learning during their management tenure.

What Have Been The Principal Differences Of CAT 2009 And 2010?

Until a few years back, the Common Aptitude Test (CAT) was a one day process, wherein all applicants across the nation appeared for CAT exam on the same date. CAT is one of the most prestigious competitive exams for those who wish to seek admission into the country’s premier management institutions.

However, CAT went through a change recently – it was transformed into an online examination that is set to last over three weeks. CAT 2010 is the first computer-based test of CAT. This new system of conducting the CAT examination was welcomed by students one and all, with a few apprehensions whatsoever.

CAT 2010 has been way better than CAT 2009, is the opinion of most of the CAT takers across the country. And this is not just an opinion, but a fact as well. There has been a glitch-free season of CAT so far, thanks to the colossal efforts of the CAT convener – Prof. Himanshu Rai of IIM Lucknow. He has been chiefly responsible for the forecast and vigilant execution of the Online procedure of CAT 2010. There have been some changes that have been made to the procedure of convening this examination, and a comparative analysis of the two will help CAT takers in the future:

A. One of the most important changes is the number of test days in the CAT window. From ten days to twenty, the number of days has been extended as compared to the last year 2009.

B. Also, there has been a significant change in the number of CAT takers this year, from 2,46,000 in 2009 to 2,04,000 in 2010. There has been a massive reduction in the number of applicants (15 per cent), which is contrary to what has been the case over the last decade.

C. CAT 2009 was held over a period of twelve days, including the extra two days for retests of some students. However, there have been no reported cases of retests this year.

D. CAT 2009 takers were competing for admissions in 7 IIMS while this year, the number of IIMs have been increased to 10, another opportunity for all aspirants to look forward to.

E. The difficulty level of CAT 2010 however has been brought down to easy, as compared to the level of CAT 2009. This has come as a welcome change to all aspirants and students who seem more satisfied and at ease.

However, on the darker side, this year too, there have been students who have complained about certain erroneous questions. In some of the students’ tests, the options provided for each of the questions did not contain the correct option. Owing to these complaints, the conveners have sent the questions for a thorough check and the results are yet awaited. CAT 2010 has grabbed all the attention, especially because it is your one chance to get into some of the country’s most coveted management schools, like IIMs, FMS, ISB, et al.

Management education has been gaining importance over the years, and the demand for management graduates is increasing by the day. Prestigiousmanagement institutions like the Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, too consider CAT scores for admission into IMT.

Relevance Of CAT In Master In Business Administration

By and by, the relevance of MBA education in India-one of the emerging economies in the world-has increased immeasurably. Countless number of management institutions has sprung up in patches in the country to inculcate professional MBA trainings to deserving candidates, and this new development aims at eliminating the current shortage of qualified and well-trained managers sprawling across all the industries in the country.

CAT (Common Admission Test) is India’s most reputed management examination, and it is also the foremost screening process for admission in premier Indian Management Institutions (IIMs). The CAT score determines not only an MBA aspirant’s dream to qualify for admission in IIMs but it inadvertently validates management admission of MBA aspirants in mid and low rung institutions.

Every year, tens and thousands of students irrespective of their fields of academic study or specialization take their trysts with CAT. Apparently, the trend in the CAT examination follows ‘twist and turn’ and this year it has recorded a drastic drop of about 15% in the number of candidates compared to last year’s 2,41,000 students who took the test. Industry experts blame the prevailing post-recession market (to some extent) responsible for unleashing insecurity among MBA aspirants.

According to statistics, nearly 60% of the total number of CAT applicants is candidates with job experience, and it is this segment of the data that have shown a drastic drop in numbers. CAT examination is especially designed for students who are interested in pursuing post graduate level management degree from prestigious B-schools in India. It is held once annually and the level of difficulty is comparatively higher to other management entrance examinations, plus this kind of examination is conducted at a national level.

Technically, the CAT written examination consists of various sections whose objectives are to test the overall intelligence and proficiency of the candidate in the areas of general awareness, logical reasoning/ ability, data interpretation, quantitative ability and so on. Owing to the high difficulty level of the examination, interested candidates are recommended thorough practice and preparation before going ahead with it.

This management entrance holds the highest value in MBA admission in India that is why it stirs waves among students who are keen on applying for admission in renowned B-schools. The management entrance examination is conducted for admission to the following post graduate programs namely- Management, Agri-business management, Software enterprise management, Computer aided management, Public policy and management, Management for executives and lastly, Fellow program in management.

A graduation degree from any recognized university with not less than 50% aggregate marks in any stream is the standard requirement for CAT application. Leading management institutions like IMT which ranks third amongst private B-schools in India admits CAT qualified students annually in their post graduate management programs offered at various locations- IMT Ghaziabad, IMT Dubai, IMT Hyderabad (underway) and IMT Nagpur.

Ghaziabad,India-In a fast changing country riding on the waves of economic boom and a burgeoning middle class, life is full of opportunities and avenues for many.
